Marshmallow is a herb with a history dating back thousands of years. It was used by the Ancient Greeks and Ancient Egyptians medicinally to treat all sorts of ailments. It is a mucilaginous herb, known for its calming, soothing and healing properties. It is frequently used to support digestive comfort and may help to soothe and coat the gastrointestinal tract.

The combination of marshmallow root together with slippery elm is a powerful one, as slippery elm is also known for its soothing and calming effects on the digestive tract. We have also included a blend of digestive enzymes, including amylase, lipase, cellulase and lactase, to support the breakdown of carbohydrates and fats, fibres and sugars; as well as gamma oryzanol, a naturally occuring mixture of plant sterols and ferulic acid esters, which may support the digestive system.

Why might we need digestive enzymes?
Digestive enzymes are needed for the breakdown of the food we eat, and are produced by our bodies and secreted into the digestive system. However, as we age, or during periods of illness, our enzyme activity may decline, and as a result, the breakdown and therefore the absorption of vital nutrients may be compromised. Taking a supplement containing enzymes such as protease, lipase and amylase can help to support optimal breakdown of the food we eat into nutrients ready for absorption and use throughout the body for energy, growth and repair.

Does this product contain protease?
There is a very small amount of peptidase in this product, which is a protease. However, we have chosen not to include higher levels of protease, so that this product can be used by those with gastritis or stomach ulcers, as protease is often not recommended in those situations, as it may cause irritation.
